The metallic seal on the right, with large holes in it, ensures that air can only enter the mug after it has passed through the heating element.

Tumbler and door
The hot air is now making its way through the clothes in the cup, and then into the holes in the door.
Slots and door openings
Air passes through the holes in the door and exits through the large hole under the door that leads to the lint filter.
Lint screen and channel
Air is drawn through the lint filter and down a channel at the front of the dryer, where it enters the fan.
Fan and exhaust pipe
A fan is a type of centrifugal device - as it rotates, it blows air out, sucks air in from the center and pushes it out of the duct at the back of the dryer. In the next section we'll see what makes the acrobat spinner.
Belt and tumbler
If you open a dryer, the surprising thing is that there are no gears on the tumbler. It turns out the cup is one gigantic gear (or actually a pulley), and the motor drives a small pulley. Due to the ratio between large bobbin diameter and small motor pulley diameter, no other gear is needed!
You can see the thin belt wrapped around the acrobat in the photo above.
The motor and pulleys
A motor drives the small silver pulley which is shown under the black pulley in the photo above. The belt runs through the silver pulley, through the black pulley, and then around the pulley. Black pulley provides tension - when the belt is buckled, the pulley is pulled from the center, and the spring tries to pull it back. This gives the belt its tension.
The same electric motor drives both the fan and the bowl. The acrobatic belt pulley is connected to one output of the motor, and the fan is connected to the other. |
