Josh McDaniels sent ripples throughout the NFL with his decision to pull out of an agreement to become the Indianapolis Colts’ head coach.

He has yet to speak publicly about what factored into the 11th hour about-face. But McDaniels’ return as New England’s offensive coordinator keeps a possible successor for Patriots coach Bill Belichick in house.

Belichick gave no indication after the Super Bowl loss to Philadelphia on Sunday night that he plans to exit in 2018. And just last month he said that it was ”absolutely” his intention to be back for his 19th season with the Patriots.

But at age 65 he’s also the second-oldest coach in the NFL Calvin Ridley Falcons Jersey , behind only Seattle’s Pete Carroll at 66.

McDaniels has been one of the hottest names in coaching searches every offseason over the past three years.

At 41, he’s considered one of the NFL’s brightest young minds. What’s more, McDaniels is someone whom Patriots quarterback Tom Brady trusts and recently called ”a great coach and a great friend.”

It’s unclear how McDaniels’ decision will affect him regarding future opportunities with other NFL teams, a gamble should he never get the opportunity to lead the Patriots.

Colts general manager Chris Ballard said Wednesday that the assistants that McDaniels had already hired to be on his staff would have their contracts honored. If McDaniels ever leaves New England again, he will certainly have some repairs to make to his image around the league.

Responding to a suggestion that comfort with the Patriots might have played a role in McDaniels’ decision, former coach and current NBC football analyst Tony Dungy said in a tweet Wednesday that ”there is no excuse big enough to justify this,” adding it was indefensible to leave the assistant coaches he’s hired in limbo.

Charlie Weis, who was Patriots offensive coordinator from 2000 through 2004 and coached alongside McDaniels, is now an analyst on SiriusXM NFL Radio. During an appearance on Mad Dog Sports Radio he called McDaniels’ decision ”unbelievable.”

”I know his agent, Bob LaMonte. I had his agent for 15 years,” Weis said. ”And I promise you, with 100 percent conviction, this is against what Bob LaMonte wanted him to do.”

LaMonte didn’t return a message seeking comment. LaMonte represents several coaches and executives around the NFL Shaquem Griffin Seahawks Jersey , including Ballard.

McDaniels is one of Belichick’s most-tenured assistants, having served under him a combined of 15 years (nine as offensive coordinator) over two different stints, beginning in 2001. It’s a run that allowed him to be a part of all five of New England’s Super Bowl wins.

The only break in his Patriots’ timeline came from 2009 to 2011, when he served as the Denver Broncos coach for two seasons, followed by a stop in St. Louis as the Rams offensive coordinator in 2011. He returned to New England in 2012.

During Super Bowl week, McDaniels spoke about the support he has in New England. He said it was the biggest takeaway from his failed experience in Denver.

”It’s about the people that are with you more than it is about one person,” McDaniels said. ”There’s no doubt about that. It takes an army of good people pulling the same direction to try to have success and I think the most important thing a head coach can do.”

The Patriots have rarely let people with significant institutional knowledge walk out the door since Belichick took over in 2000.

And It would hardly be ideal timing for the Patriots to change offensive coordinators on Brady, who will also turn 41 in August.

Despite New England’s Super Bowl loss to the Eagles, McDaniels was the architect of another typical Patriots offensive showcase, as New England gained 613 yards.

”I think he is so well prepared and gets me prepared every week,” Brady said of McDaniels. ”He is so diligent. He is just a great coach. I love playing for him.”

McDaniels and Brady did have a heated moment on the sideline during win over Buffalo this past season. But Brady publicly apologized to McDaniels after video of their verbal skirmish went viral.

”A lot of people see it and they think the nature of our relationship would be something like that, but it’s really the exact opposite of that,” Brady said at the time. ”He knows how much I love him.”

AP Pro Football Writer Arnie Stapleton contributed to this report.

Chargers tight end Hunter Henry tore his knee ligament while running an ordinary route during a non-contact workout on the opening day of organized team activities Cheap DJ Moore Jersey , general manager Tom Telesco confirmed Wednesday.

Telesco declined to confirm whether the Chargers will go back to Antonio Gates to fill the suddenly gaping hole in their offense.

Henry is expected to miss the upcoming season while he recovers from his knee injury, which dealt an extraordinary blow to the Chargers’ plans more than three months before their opener.

The franchise’s second-round pick in 2016 was slated to fill a major role in the Chargers’ offense after catching 81 passes for 1,057 yards and 12 touchdowns over his first two seasons.

”I’m not going to minimize it: He’s a Pro Bowl talent with Pro Bowl intangibles,” Telesco said. ”As bad as we feel about losing him, and as bad as the fans feel about it, Hunter feels worse. This team means a lot to him. He means a lot to us. It’s going to be harder without him, but let me be clear: We will adapt and move on.”

Telesco indicated the Chargers haven’t decided how they’ll adapt just yet, and he is grateful they’ve got a few months to come up with a plan.

The GM was entirely noncommittal about the possibility on every Chargers fan’s mind: A reunion with Gates, the franchise’s career leader in receptions and yards receiving, and the NFL record-holder for TD catches by a tight end.

”Just looking at where we’re at right now, we’ve got to look at really all of our options and what are out there, and kind of take it from there,” Telesco said when pressed about the possibility of re-signing Gates.

The Chargers publicly bade farewell last month to Gates Carlton Davis Buccaneers Jersey , who will turn 38 years old in June. Gates, whose 30 receptions last season were his fewest since his rookie season with the Bolts in 2003, already said he hopes to play in the NFL again this season.

Last month, Telesco cited a desire to increase Henry’s role in one of the NFL’s best offenses as a prime reason to part ways with Gates after 15 seasons. Before he missed the final two games of last season with a kidney laceration, Henry emerged as a top target for Philip Rivers, combining his size and athleticism with improved route-running.

”He’s taking it tough, as you’d expect,” Telesco said. ”He loves this team, and we love him, too, and he wants to be a part of it this year. … He feels like he let us down. I told him, `Look, you did not let this football team down. You went out there Tyron Smith Jersey Elite , and you’re practicing the way you always do, and these things happen.”’

These things seem to happen dismayingly often to the Chargers. Their recent history is littered with major injury problems for key players at nearly every position except quarterback, where Rivers has played every game since 2006.

The Bolts largely avoided debilitating injuries last year during their relocation season, and they barely missed the playoffs at 9-7 after winning nine of their final 12 games.

With Henry injured and Gates unsigned, the Chargers have exactly one tight end on their roster with an NFL catch: Virgil Green, an offseason free-agent signee from Denver, where he was used primarily as a blocker. Braedon Bowman and Sean Culkin also are back from last season’s team, but neither has significant NFL experience.

”We have some young players on the roster that we think have a chance to develop,” Telesco said. ”As we saw today in practice, they got a lot of extra balls today. So we’ll see if some of those guys can ascend.”
