"China is so different from other countries around the world," the slim, poised young man told Xinhua of his decision. "Because its fast development is so recent, it would be a great opportunity to observe and study the process in real time."
Theo's connection with China mirrors tens of thousands of others from Africa that have chosen to explore the world's biggest developing country and an old friend to the continent.

During the stay, he has discovered quite a few similarities between his homeland and China, both undergoing vast changes amid fast development.

Recalling his first encounter with the Asian country, Theo said he did not realize he was underprepared until he arrived at Beijing Capital International Airport and tried to take a taxi: the driver could neither understand nor speak a word of English. The same thing happened when he finally reached the dormitory, where the staff could not speak English either.
"The good thing about China is that people here would go out of their way to help you," said Theo, explaining how every time he encountered difficulties, strangers came up and offered a helping hand. The graduate student said he also experienced Chinese hospitality in different ways. He recalled spending his first Spring Festival, also known as China's lunar new year, at a Chinese home in Linyi city in eastern Shandong province, at the invitation of his classmate.
