As a college freshman who went through this process relatively recently (especially thrilling was to write my essay), I find this solution to be slightly demeaning.
I worked incredibly hard in my four years of high school and gave an excellent interview. I don't see why that shouldn't put me at a greater advantage over other applicants.
Then again, I go to a small liberal arts school with great emphasis on leadership and communication skills. Maybe this could work in a technical institution, or in STEM programs that emphasize skills that can be quantitatively measured. For me, however, as a political science/theatre major, I don't think it would serve the program and institution that I am in well to have students chosen from a lottery where there is a minimum qualification, rather than an assessment of who they are as an individual. |
